Aaron Rodgers uncertain over NFL future with no deadline on Pittsburgh Steelers decision

Aaron Rodgers says he is yet to make a decision over his NFL future, but insists there is no deadline on whether he will continue with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2026.

Having suggested the 2025 campaign might be his last, the 42-year-old quarterback is still mulling over what comes next after helping Pittsburgh reach the playoffs as AFC North champions.

Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the Steelers last offseason, and is currently on course to become a free agent next week.

"There's been no deadline that's been put in front of me," Rodgers told The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday. "There's no contract offer or anything, so there's nothing that I'm having to debate between.

"I'm a free agent. I'm enjoying my time with my wife and enjoying this part of the offseason, and I think there's conversations to be had down the line, but right now, there hasn't been any progressive conversations. I love Mike [McCarthy], and Mike and I have kept some contact over the years."

Rodgers had struck up a strong relationship with head coach Mike Tomlin, who subsequently left the organisation following his 19th season in charge earlier this year.

The four-time league MVP arrived in Pittsburgh in the wake of two disappointing seasons with the New York Jets, the first of which saw him suffer a year-ending Achilles injury four plays into his debut.

Flashes of his storied best paved the way to an improved year in 2025 as Rodgers threw for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns to seven interceptions.

"I've had conversations with Omar (General Manager Omar Khan. I think Omar enjoyed having me there," he said. "I think the guys had a positive response to our time together.

"But again, there hasn't been any deadline set on me, there hasn't been any contract floated in front of me for me to, like, 'Well, we're giving you to March 8 to make a decision on this contract.'

"There's been nothing to that respect. Interested in what the conversations will be, but there hasn't been any progression when it comes to that."

Should Rodgers stay put, it shall mean a reunion with Mike McCarthy after the former Green Bay Packers head coach was hired as Tomlin's successor.

Together, Rodgers and McCarthy won Super Bowl XLV at the end of the 2010 campaign as the Packers beat the Steelers 31-25.

"Mike's one of the great guys in the league," said Rodgers. "Just absolutely an exceptional human being with a huge heart.

"We had a lot of good years together. A lot of fun. He really cares about the players. But he also holds guys accountable and creates a lot of structure and details in the process. But, man, I loved my time with Mike over the years."

The new league year begins on March 11 at 4pm Eastern Time, at which point free agents can officially sign with teams. Teams are permitted to begin negotiating with players from March 9.
