Winter Olympics: Johannes Klaebo makes history with sixth gold in single Games, Norwegian wins 50km mass start

Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo became the first athlete to win six gold medals at a single Winter Olympics after continuing his stunning run with victory in the 50km mass start.

The 29-year-old's success on Saturday followed triumphs in the 10km freestyle, 20km skiathlon, individual sprint, 7.5km relay and team sprint earlier in the Games.

Klaebo's haul of golds eclipses the five claimed by American speed skater Eric Heiden at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.

Heiden still holds the record for the most individual golds at one Winter Games, with all five of his victories coming solo while two of Klaebo's were in team events.

Klaebo has 11 Olympic gold medals for his career after five titles across the 2018 event in South Korea and 2022 Games in China.

Only former swimmer Michael Phelps, with 23, has more Olympic golds than Klaebo when Summer Games are also taken into consideration.

Phelps won eight of his golds at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

As Klaebo toasted his latest gold in the 50km mass start, Great Britain's Andrew Musgrave crossed the line in sixth place.
